Which is why if you see people MAKING UP attribute values like:

<meta name="robots" content="dofollow, doindex" />

or

<a href="#" rel="dofollow">

They're 100% chock full of grade A farm fresh horse dung.

@deathshadowAug 10.2014 — Not sure why you quoted me, but:

Step 5: Now, on the "html.index" page, add the following html code <a title="check out" href="http://adetechblog.com" target="_blank" rel="dofollow">Ya' Technology Villa</a>
Shouldn't do anything -- again THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "DOFOLLOW" -- that value doesn't do anything, it means jack ****. ANYONE telling you it will do something doesn't know enough about HTML or search engines to be flapping their ignorant halfwit gums on the subject.

VALID VALUES FOR "REL":

alternate, author, bookmark, help, license, next, nofollow, noreferrer, prefetch, cached, prev, search, tag

That's it, that's ALL of them. Anything else is 100% grade A fictional BS, and people just pulling code out of their backside. EVEN if you can trick Facebook into outputting rel="dofollow" it's not going to do a blasted thing! If it DOES work, it's because you tricked it into NOT outputting 'nofollow' in which case you could leave out rel="dofollow" altogether!

Which I STILL doubt would actually work... gee, I wonder why...

Though I wonder why they have that giant set of specific rules when it ends with:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

Shouldn't even let it get as far as checking the markup!

So "dofollow"? :/ not quite.

@plexxerSep 02.2014 — YESSSS!!! There is a method that I am aware of on how to get a DoFollow Backlink from Facebook!

I wrote an article on the topic which illustrates step by step directions on my new site. I even made a video illustrating this. I will post a link to my site here, directly to the article. Please do not judge!!! The site is only about 3 days old and I am still putting it together. However, the article on how to get a dofollow from Facebook is completely finished and ready for human readers.

I will be posting more on dofollow backlinks such as how to obtain one from Google+, and some other high PR sites.

I have been preparing my materials from research that I have been doing for quite some time. I have a fresh list of 300 DoFollow sites and another list of 60,000 DoFollow sites. I will be posting all of this info at DoFollow.xyz

Also, trying to fool the system and get a turkey of a site a better rating than it deserves is ultimately a waste of time. Why? Because it is still a turkey of a site.

In response to your comment above,

1st --> "Supposing just for sake of argument that you are right" --

I don't suppose! I am right! There is a thing called "Inspect Element" that shows you the source code and allows you to inspect the element. From there, you can clearly see that the URL is a rel="dofollow".

Ok, moving on to your next question..

2 --> "how long do you think it will take Facebook to stop it working and/or Google to blacklist it?"

Facebook will NOT STOP IT! Facebook is well aware of it and allows it! Do you really think that Facebook doesn't know what goes on in their own home?

Furthermore, the link is obtained through a legitimate Facebook app which is very popular and serves more than just the purpose of getting a DoFollow link from Facebook. Guess who approves all of the Facebook apps that are available on Facebook? Hmmm... Could the answer possibly be Facebook? Yes, that is the correct answer! Facebook has a staff that apps are submitted to. If they pass certification then they are approved. If they don't pass, well, then they are rejected.

Why in the WORLD would Google blacklist a link from Facebook when it is legitimately obtained? If Facebook allows a DoFollow from their site then that is their business. Google has nothing to do with it. Google only blacklists sites that are spammy and associated with spammy linkbuilding tactics. Meaning, they use software to obtain spammy links.

The DoFollows that I have obtained from Facebook are far from SPAM!!! They are perfectly legitimate and I will continue to build them as I see fit.

IF you want to be a skeptic or don't want to take advantage of a DoFollow backlink coming from a PR9 website, then that's your own problem, and I feel sorry for you. You are entitled to your own opinions and you can build links to your own site any way that you please. However, don't come in here insulting my practices after I reveal to you how to legitimately obtain a backlink from a PR9 website.

Next, I am NOT FOOLING the system. You should have looked into my method and actually done a little bit of research before blindly commenting on a topic that you are CLEARLY CLUELESS about!

If you have any further questions for me, I would be glad to answer them for you!

In particular pay attention to:

https://www.facebook.com/robots.txt

User-agent: *

Means that no UA will ever index ANY of the entire domain (making the first ~130 or so lines of that .txt redundant BTW) -- and if it's not indexed, guess what? No links can be followed because it should never even get that far! (which is why saying noindex, nofollow in a META is redundant and stupid too!)

Which means it doesn't matter what the markup says, particularly when THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS DOFOLLOW!!!!!... which means saying rel="dofollow" does but two things particularly when there's a robots.txt present saying not to index THE ENTIRE SITE!!!

Since again, there is NO SUCH THING AS DOFOLLOW OR DOINDEX, the only valid values are NOFOLLOW and NOINDEX -- not that it really matters when ALL search engines are told to not even go through ANYTHING on the domain by the robots.txt; meaning there isn't a blasted thing you can do in your markup to override that!

Now, the META does allow for "index" and "follow", NOT "doindex" and "dofollow" -- the latter being made up bull that I don't know what halfwit started the trend of people trying to use them...

http://www.robotstxt.org/meta.html

There is NO SUCH THING ON "REL"
Don't confuse this NOFOLLOW with the rel="nofollow" link attribute.
Where on REL there's no such thing as NOINDEX either, the ONLY valid value for REL in terms of search engine behavior is nofollow... there is no follow, no dofollow, nada, zip, zilch, nein!

... and then people wonder why I say most SEO "experts" don't know enough about any web technologies to be flapping their gums on the subject!

Bottom line? The code in your little article doesn't do a blasted thing.

Actually, I have a pretty good understanding of how the web works!

I understand that you are hung up on the fact that the rel="dofollow" attribute does NOT exist...

In that sense, Yes, you are correct. The rel=dofollow attribute DOES NOT exist and it is made up...

However, what does it matter? You are 110% incorrect when you say my article is full of crap! I am using the term "dofollow" loosely and referring to a concept! The concept is that when the attribute rel="nofollow" is absent, the link gets crawled by search engines. Am I correct?

I believe I am... Even though the rel="dofollow" attribute is non-existent as far as HTML standards are concerned, it still has meaning to the billions of webmasters that are referring to it as meaning that the search engines will follow a link.

Let me ask you this, "how do the search engines treat a rel=nofollow?" In the words of Matt Cutts, and I am paraphrasing, they take that to mean that the webmaster does not trust the site that the link leads to.

ok, so now how about rel=dofollow, how do the search engines treat it?

Well, simple answer is that it is treated as if it wasn't even there... But when you see that rel=dofollow is present, generally that means that rel=nofollow is absent. This translates into a link that is trusted, or WILL BE FOLLOWED.

So rather than trying to be difficult and nitpick at my post, look at the big picture! The link from Facebook in fact will be followed by the crawlers.

We use the term "DoFollow" because it has an understood meaning. We have given it that meaning and now it is a universal definition all across the web! SO please don't hate!

As far as I am concerned, I addressed the issue and my conversation with you is over!

For everyone else, READ BELOW for a more detailed explanation if you care to.

.........................................................................................................................................................................................

Google introduced the rel="nofollow" link attribute in 2005 in response to the proliferation of comment spam.

Blog comment links would be given the rel="nofollow" attribute so googlebot wouldn't crawl the pages being linked to. Well, unless the same page was linked to from somewhere else without rel="nofollow".

It didn't work. Not only did legitimate links get tagged with rel="nofollow", but comment spam is as persistent as it ever was.

Yet, rel="nofollow" is still with us, albeit with a change in purpose.

Currently, according to Google's Matt Cutts, the rel="nofollow" is a method to "tell search engines 'I can't or don't want to vouch for this link.'" Links with the rel="nofollow" attribute won't help sites rank higher in Google's search results.

With that information, it got crazy. It became, in essence, a "rel='no-back-link-recognition" link attribute instead of a rel="nofollow".

Some site owners proceeded to nofollow every link leading to other sites. The idea was to keep all page rank or to let the other sites look out for their own page rank. Over time, many site owners became very close-fisted with links to other sites.

In order to boost page rank of certain pages, some site owners used rel="nofollow" to link to their own, less important pages. The idea was that with only so much page rank to go around, don't drain it off with links to less important pages.

The state of the rel="nofollow" link attribute's perception today is pretty much a state of confusion. Not only has Google shifted it's purpose, and may do so again, but there is also inadequate information about which other search engines recognize rel="nofollow" and how they treat it.

Unless your situation warrants otherwise, it may be prudent to just skip rel="nofollow". Or, if you must use it, use it sparingly, perhaps only where unmoderated messages can be published, and never on friends' sites or sites you trust.

If a certain link simply must not be followed by search engines, the Linking Without an "A" Tag method may work for your situation.

Dofollow

"Dofollow" is a concept or a statement. It means links do not contain the rel="nofollow" link attribute.

There is no rel="dofollow" attribute, only the absence of rel="nofollow". (Well, one can insert a rel="dofollow" attribute into links, or any unrecognized attribute for that matter, it just won't make any difference in how the link is treated.)

At the point when most blogs were putting a rel="nofollow" attribute into their comment links, some blogs got an advantage in the competition for comments by declaring themselves a dofollow blog. In other words, a blog where links in comments did not contain rel="nofollow".

Commenting is encouraged at dofollow blogs because links can have SEO value for the commenter. (Blogs using the rel="nofollow" link attribute, on the other hand, discourage commenting because there is no SEO value for the commenter.)

Dedicated sites and pages of links were developed to list dofollow blogs.

A WordPress plugin was developed (called the Dofollow plugin) to get around the blogging software's automatic implementation of nofollow.

The idea of dofollow became confused with rel="nofollow", for some, because the rel="dofollow" opposite of rel="nofollow" seemed to make sense. In actuality, there is no rel="dofollow".

Bottom Line

rel="nofollow" is a link attribute. It tells search engine spiders that you can't or won't vouch for the link.

dofollow is not a link attribute. It is a statement indicating links are free of the rel="nofollow" attribute.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@deathshadowSep 03.2014 — All of which means nothing when the page isn't even being indexed thanks to a robots.txt ... if it's not indexed, it's not spidered, so search engines would never get as far as even going through the markup in the first place!!! As such you could put anything you wanted in the HTML for text, links, etc and search engines should be giving a flying purple fish about what you're wasting time trying to do.

Saying "dofollow" is stupid, it's just "follow" -- and NEITHER exists for the REL attribute... neither of which would mean jack even as a robots META since search engines shouldn't even reach that point thanks to the disallow in the ROBOTS.TXT

It's NOT a "universal definition" it's universal stupidity, far, FAR worse than the idiotic halfwit garbage of "web 2.0" or what HTML 5 is quickly turning into; sick buzzwords people use without understanding what they mean or do. You can TELL it's ignorant nonsense when people are actually saying things like rel="dofollow" or content="dofollow, doindex" in their markup because of it!

... and hate? It's what I do. After all, hate is the greatest force for good there is; beats the ever living tar out of apathy, ignorance and wishful thinking. Status quo for the win is no plan for success, and turning the other cheek usually just gets the other one slapped too. This soft, limp, wussy "don't dare say anything that might offend" nonsense ... gah. Can't stand it.

I use the term "do follow" in this manner. It's simpler than "no nofollow" or trying to explain "quality backlink" to some people.
