Employee idea project

Hi Everyone!

It’s a long question, so please bear with me.

My task is to produce a website that is more or less a place where employees can make idea suggestions.

An employee will be able to add their idea using a form, and all the required fields will populate a database. If that idea relates to a certain manager’s department i would like it to inform him/her (maybe by email?).

The manager will be able to view all the ideas and drill down to the ideas that affect their department. If an idea is good i would like that manager to be able to feedback the progress of their idea. How would i incorporate a status tracker? I would need usernames and passwords for each manager and i would like them to provide comments to employees that they can read in their own section.

The main thing is making sure that the manager is informed of the idea and the way in which they can update the progress of the idea.

I hope you can provide me with the best way of doing this. Would it be Mysql and php?

@WebDesignPhxApr 15.2014 — I would first search wordpress themes to see if someone has already created something similar. Then if I could not find any I would develop custom with Php and Mysql.

@rtretheweyApr 15.2014 — To answer your question, yes, a database-driven system will be required. The best solution depends on your experience in programming. This project is basically a simple survey that allows comments or other plain text responses. If you search any of the online scripts directories, I'm sure you could find a survey script that could be adapted to work for you.

You'll need a script that allows setting up administrator accounts with a control panel of some kind to allow managers to see the results. From there its just a matter of wording the survey "questions" in a way that invites employee suggestions. It's a pretty straightforward project that would be good for a beginner. Good luck!

@jedaisoulApr 15.2014 — I would add: Have you been given a detailed spec. including who has access to what? If not, I'd suggest that you be aware of the disadvantages of restricting access too severely. It is a common error, particularly with inexperienced developers. You must follow company policy, but it may be better if everyone in the company can view and comment on ideas. The constraint on trivial/malicious posting would be traceability and accountability, not opportunity. I.e. The information could be regarded as "company confidential", not "need to know".

Oh, and staff are often better at pointing out issues, rather than providing effective solutions. So an ideas processing system should ideally recognize, and reward, both aspects: Identifying issues and providing solutions. Not just the latter.
