It really depends on what you are selling or the reason your trying to bring people to your site. I have a site that generates 4k/month from less than 50 visits per day. You really have to figure out exactly where your customers are spending time or exactly what they are after and then approach them with help.
For the site I referred to the customer is searching for a text to help them study for an exam. I approach them at this point with a great study guide and exam questions. It took a while to figure all that out, but I'm getting faster and more refined the more I do this.
