How Google knows if is there any mobile version of a existing website?

Hello friends, i am confused that how Google knows that the website is mobile portable or not, is Google automatically detects it or we have to do it manually?

@howardbaileyMar 18.2014 — Google can show both results if you have both website versions, mobile and desktop. The thing is very simple you have to tell google using some redirects that which one is for mobile and which one is for desktop. You can google this to find redirect tags that can tell spiders to go on different websites.
