Link Building will never became a past. Value or importance of link building is still the same as it previous hold and it'll the same in future too. Only thing which effect to change the methods which we are using to build the links.

@noelworliJan 28.2014 — Link building can never be a thing of past as Google rely heavily on a website backlinks profile before they deliver any results.

@Steve_R_JonesmoderatorJan 30.2014 — The owners of WebDev (this site) own a total of 22 forum sites.

We are starting to get bombarded with emails like the following:

We have discovered a link pointing to our website XZY.com from the following page on your website....XXX

We have determined that the said link is not in compliance with Google's webmaster guidelines. We kindly ask that you remove this link immediately or add a no follow attribute to it.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me directly.

That means that one of our members posted a link to the company's web site.....

I asked our editor what was meant by "not in compliance with Google's webmaster guidelines."

Our editors reply:

It means nothing to us. ?

It means Google has identified that they are being linked to from a site that doesn't relate to their site. Google figures that since they put a link on a site that doesn't' related, they are trying to cheat the system (spamming) and thus will penalize you for the link. Google wants to make sure people are linking sites that related and not just getting links from anywhere.

It *used to be* that getting links was good regardless of where they were from. More links, was better. Links from popular site were the best. Google changed the rules and now they say links have to be relevant, so everyone that used to go out and try to get links everywhere is now scrambling to get links removed from sites that don't relate.

The spammers got slapped.
The post and link from the member was posted ELEVEN YEARS AGO... The post was about Flash technology and the link was to a Telephone Company and was posted to show an example of Flash... Now the Telephone company is being penalized for the link. A short period back - the The Telephone Company was benefiting from the link and getting traffic they might not have gotten otherwise.

NOTE: Sites like WebDev will not remove links from within posts.

@Honey497Jan 31.2014 — I don't think so. It is still important for website's ranking but it is shifted to relevant and brand link building.
