Opinions on Joomla?

let me explain. I’ve become reasonably well versed in HTML, CSS, and Javascript, and have been building sites with my old tried and true HOMESITE (macromedia) editor for over 10 years. But times have changed, starting with TIME itself. I just don’t have the time to hand code sites anymore, unless its absolutely necessary. So I was looking for some compromise. Something that gave me the convenience of WYSIWYG page, menus, and navigation editing, while still allowing me to tweak my page templates and CSS files.

I guess that latter part really doesn’t exist anymore the way I’m used to working. Everything available now, especially on my budget, is all PHP based CMS systems. Well I’ve already wasted over a week messing with WordPress, and after the usual initial frustration I guess its usable. But I’m not really happy with it and am wondering if there might be a better choice. So a few people recommended I try Joomla. I will, but I’ve also learned that “try” means spending considerable time, and it might pay for me to get some familiarity from other users before I jump in. So…

1) does it offer the kind of WYSIWYG interface I’m looking for?

2) Lets say you find a template or theme or whatever you “kind of” like. How tough is it to edit the underlying CSS and/or templates, to really customize it to the look you want?

3) With an HTML based site, you can pretty reliably test the whole thing at home on your various machines and browsers, and tweak it until your happy before you publish. How on earth can you do that with a CMS, if it requires your hosting company’s server to really test? (I know you can set up your own server, but Murphy’s law says it won’t work exactly like my hosting company does).

4) Finally, if there are other that tried Joomla with a similar motivation and background, I’m really interested in how you feel about it. Excited? Great? Sucks? Don’t waste your time?

thanks in advance!

Several Great WYSIWYG text editors are available for CONTENT. If you're speaking of "Site Preview," Joomla is well equipped in that regard as well.

Provided you are familiar with Firebug for Firefox, it isn't difficult at all. Firebug gives the precise line in the exact file which is controlling the appearance of any object on the page.

XAMP for a Windows machine, MAMP for a Mac are two well known and documented "Stand Alone Servers" which are free for the download. I have had great success with a low cost ($20 US I think) called joomlas2go.

Any of these will let you have a play with Joomla (or any other CMS) without engaging an Internet server.

I don't meet your "motivatiion and Background" I have worked with Joomla since its inception, and am hardly "un-biased". I love Joomla, but it's not perfect by any means. Yopu will find that most of the battle is just spending enough time with it that you know where stuff is.

For instance, WordPress is universally praised and rightly so... I hate working with it. Why? because it isn't Joomla, and all my education and training on Joomla is worthless.

Good Luck.

@PeterPan_321authorJan 07.2014 — Thanks ranWilli! I'm still leery of the whole CMS thing. Messing with wordpress, for example, I was surprised to find that any GIFs I tried to use (Yeah I know GIFs are old, but I like the animation) were getting mangled by a flaw in the PHP GD library. I got it resolved, but it was a headache for someone like me who up to now never even needed to know what PHP was!

I guess my main disappointment reading your answer is that it doesn't have a WYSIWYG editor. I'm used to hand coding, but was looking for something that assisted in making the page layout easier, and allowed for strong use of CSS, or tweaking the code and adding scripting when I needed to. In posting for suggestions I got lots of suggestions for things like Wordpress and now Joomla. But I maybe going down a wrong direction here. I guess what i really want is Dreamweaver. Unfortunately, I can't afford it. :-(

Re-read my ANSWER- ther are several GREAT WYSIWYG editors for content. Whatever you type in appears formatted as it will on the page. My own favorite is JCE.

@PatricescottJan 26.2014 — Joomla is good for larger sites with multiple contributors.
