Determining file mime type

is there a way to determine the type of file on the server (other than checking extensions and telling the script what the file will be) something like the $_FILES[“file”][“type”] but the file hasn’t been uploaded, its already on the server. There is a function i found that does this but it needs PHP to be compiled with it (something like magic mime?!) is this possible?
