should i use templates

hello i’m new in web development i want to use php for development (php with mysql ,…). for the first try i want to create a personal website. should i use free templates? i mean is it usual in web developing to write everything from scratch or use ready themes. if professionals write even templates from scratch do they use some special editors or tools?(i mean for HTML,CSS,…)
PS: i don’t want to use any framework. pure php.

@jedaisoulNov 18.2013 — For your first try, you might find writing HTML, CSS, PHP and SQL a little too ambitious. I'd suggest getting to grips with HTML and CSS first. Then you could improve the structure using PHP code like include files and variables. After that, you might go for a database solution using SQL.

@NogDogNov 18.2013 — Professionals plagiarize ... I mean, re-use existing code ... all the time. Why reinvent the wheel if you can get a perfectly good, well tested wheel off the rack?

Now, if the main goal is to learn (as opposed to maximizing productivity), there is something to be said for doing as much as possible yourself. Then again, if you use existing packages that are well established and of good quality, you can also learn by digging into their guts and finding out how they work.

So as usual, there's probably no perfect answer as to how much you should do yourself and how much you should leverage existing tools.

@fcomstocDec 03.2013 — Quick question, are you talking about Templates that work inside of a CMS (Content Management System) like wordpress, joomla, or drupal, or are you asking about HTML templates that you found? There is a big difference. CMS makes it so that you dont have to code at all (or very little anyway), HTML templates allow more freedom but require more coding and knowledge.

@jjokochaauthorDec 03.2013 — fcomstoc: i know its not logical to write everything ,there are a lot of CMS's and packages to use but my purpose was learning. for answering your question i wanted to write every single code myself and did it. i had a question that do professionals do that. after using some CMS's i found no they font do this, they always use ready codes and packages and frameworks. Now i found the Yii framework so cool and from now on i try to use it. it's not so simple and nonprofessional like WP and i think it's a good choice.
