This is a great question. I believe since the last update spamy keyword heavy links can be bad for your SEO. This is what I have read anyway...

Does anyone know?

I believe it is possible if you have a lot of traffic to your website without any backlinks. Traffic and good relevant content will definitely do the trick.

In a report titled «Goodbye Spam, Hello Data!», Paul Madden told about the intricacies of acquiring links that can not be regarded as the Google search engine link spam , shared his own experience of selection team who generated content , as well as discovered the secret of where and how collect important data about the resource.

As far as I know, partly of this strategy is acceptable, but with the latest

update, you must use keywords with variations, you must also use long tail keywords.
