opacity with css styles

is it possible to affect opacity (specifically, the Alpha filter) of an element using inline style changes… if so, what kind of syntax is needed for filters (i gave a couple examples of what i’m changing below)…
function down()
{

if(this.style)
{
this.style.backgroundColor = “#FFFFFF”;
this.style.color = “#999999”
}
}
thx in advance

function SetOp(obj)
obj.filters.alpha.opacity=100;
}
or

function SetOp(obj)
obj.style.filter="alpha(opacity=100)";
}
