It's certainly a very viable alternative, but so are Ruby/Rails, .NET, or pretty much any other programming language/database stack in common use out there. Possibly the only things that [i]might[/i] make PHP more attractive is it is both free and very widely available. But probably the main deciding factor will be what your developers prefer to develop in.
