some questions about ecommerce

Hi. Ive never set up a shop online before. On my website im selling one product (an ebook). So the whole website is just one page (a “landing page”).Ive heard of applications such as magento. Is this what i would for such a simple online “shop”?Also, do i need to set up an actual business to sell things online?

@rtretheweySep 14.2013 — I can't say whether or not you need to set up a real business because the law varies so much from city to city. But you don't need a full shopping cart program to sell a single product. PayPal offers simple ways for you to sell individual items on a website with special options for selling downloadable products like e-books. Check that out before you put any effort into building a complete shopping cart site.

Both are simple enough to use for a webmaster with a moderate level of experience. But for a beginner, the PayPal "buy" buttons do everything the OP needs without all of the complications of a full-size software package.

Guess that this is a reasonable advice. First of all you should test your business. When you notice that everything goes right, you can certainly try to widen it somehow. Then you may need to build complex online shop.

@GettingSmartSep 16.2013 — I think it also depends on what kind of experience you have.

If you don't have (much) experience with webshop systems it might be easier to setup a CMS system with a webshop module.

If you do have some experience with such systems or just a broad experience with webdesign you might be willing to setup a website using Prestashop for example.

I think most systems are not optimized for 'one page websites' so I guess you will have to do some tweaking yourself. (read: not sure, I might be wrong)
