xhtml or html – the truth?

Why are peoples feelings on the advantages of xhtml over html or otherwise so varied?

Assuming the MIME type for xhtml 1.0 is text/html and the xhtml validates correctly then there are no disadvantages. Ok, there are no advantages either I understand – so why are some authors so against using xhtml sent as text/html?

Can anyone enlighten me?

Can anyone point me in the right direction of an article that addresses this in a balanced and relevant way?
