basic functionality question

i’ve only been able to figure out how to call functions by giving each element in question a name or id, then calling out that name or id when tapping the function within the event – i’ve seen other scripts (notably: those posted here) where either the function is called then followed by empty () or the ‘this’ arguement is used… how exactly does this work, and what differentiates ‘this’ and ()

for discussion’s sake, let’s assume i’m physically unable to assign name or id attributes to elements ?
