video streaming

Hello, my name is Anna and I´m from Barcelona, Europe.

I´m stuck on a decision that I need to take regarding video streaming and I would appreciate some insight from you guys.

The question is that some companies have developed applications that don´t need to use Windows Media Player neither Real or Quicktime…in order to stream videos.

Now, my issue is that I still cannot really see which are the benefits of playerless streaming, image quality?, and if there are benefits then which is in your opinion the best playerless application to use.

I´ve spoken with all of them but an independent opinion would be helpfull.

Thank you so much.

Kind Regards,
Anna

@Robert_WellockFeb 12.2004 — Why what are they using Frobozz Magic Streaming, joking aside I am not going to watch a streaming video if that means I have to download a new program or application or plugin to view it.

But I assume what you mean is which streaming format do you think is the best, well I refuse to download the latest version of RealPlayer even though I am on T-1 and probably could do it within 2 minutes.

I do have access to MS Media Player and QuickTime Pro and MPEG-4 is a good streaming technology.

@h4r01dFeb 13.2004 — I suspect what you are seeing on the sites that stream content without a player, are actually using a player with the controls stripped away. they probably use active X controls to do this. some folks strip controls away so you cant alter the size or hijack the stream. maybe there are other reasons too.

There are three major broadcast standards around the world today - NTSC, PAL, and SECAM.

you seem to be familiar with the 3 main players. next you need to decide what you audience is going to prefer and asess your need for quality and cost of delivery.

if you are at all capable of dealing with perl, I would suggest using Darwin. its open-source and free. you can get it at Apple and it takes advantage of quicktime.

I like quicktime because it can handle slightly better earlier playback times for streaming than windows media. i havent used Real in a while, but if i recall, they dont support that feature so well.

not to mention both the windows and real applications to develop content are not free.

there are a lot of factors that I certainly didnt cover... its a huge field... Streaming media is still an extremely young field - things will change very rapidly over the next ten years. Look at how much has changed in the traditional field of audio/video...
