Vert. scrollbar not shown in IE after div.innerhtml updated

I have an inhouse application that, after a few years, users have noticed that there is no scrollbar visible when using IE (either ver 6 or 8).

The page contains a tree catalog in a div that is redrawn (expanding and contracting branches) by javascript rebuilding the tree html from data in an array, and assigning this to the div.innerhtml. When the tree is expanded so that the div becomes longer than the browser window height, the lower part of the div is no longer visible, but IE has not added a vertical scrollbar to enable the user to access this area of the div.

The code works fine in FF, Safari and Chrome, with the scrollbar immediately appearing when the div is expanded.

Is someone able to suggest what I need to set in IE to provide the scrollbar?

Many thanks
