Port number explanation needed

Please clarify what a port address is? I use specific port address for smtp and I see a different port address for my internet browsers. Is the port number I use for sending mail in my perl scripts dependent on the software application I am using?? So perl would use a port number for smtp (sending mail) and filemaker would use its own port number for sending mail out and if I use Cold Fusion to send mail I would use a Cold Fusion port number? What is difference between port and IP address?

@AdamGundryFeb 06.2004 — Each computer connected to the Internet has a large number of ports available - these allow multiple connections to occur at once. There are standard port numbers for each of the main services - for example, web browsers usually use port 80, and SMTP usually uses port 25. The actual number used is dependent on the server setup, but in most cases these defaults will be used.

Assuming your mailserver is set up normally, you send mail on port 25.

Adam

P.S. You can get a complete list of standard port numbers from IANA.
