HTML CODE HELP… Please?

Hello, my name is CJ. I just got my website not too long ago, I have finally decided to get a domain. I have it all setup and can start working on it.

Although, I have some poetry and pictures and what not that is going on my website. Is there a real good html code, maybe another different code that locks pictures, text and what not on my site. From highlighting pictures, text and pushing on your keyboard ctrl+C which copies your work… I’m sure you guys know all the tricks in the book for copying work off of websites.

Though is there another way around it, stopping people from copying my work? Thanks, I would really appreciate it!

@soccer362001Feb 03.2004 — It is practically impossible cause you would have to use JavaScript and it is very easy to disable JavaScript.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@pierskFeb 03.2004 — I agree, not much you can do using coding. Basically, your poetry can be copied by anyone. However, for the pictures, have you tried watermarking them?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@SweetDanger85authorFeb 03.2004 — How could you "disable" javascript if it is on my website?

Is there anyway of using another code to lock down the javascript so no one can disable it?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@pierskFeb 03.2004 — Because javascript is client-side and is diabled within the browser
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@SweetDanger85authorFeb 03.2004 — ?

What do you mean by watermarking them? Please explain more, if you would thanks!
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@soccer362001Feb 03.2004 — If it is poetry you wrote and pictures you took you can copyright them.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@SweetDanger85authorFeb 03.2004 — Yeah, this is poetry I wrote. Pictures of me, that I would not like being passed around online, I might sound crazy because of it but I just don't want that happening.

How much does it cost to get this stuff "copyrighted?"
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@pierskFeb 03.2004 — Just putting a copyright mark on them is legally binding.

When I say watermark, I mean open the pics up in an editor (like fireworks) and in one of the corners, put some text like "Copyright 2004 Your name"
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@SweetDanger85authorFeb 03.2004 — On forum boards, they can have this way of taking pictures and putting this option and stuff on avatars where the avatars can only be used here or on the forum boards. So if someone saved them, and were to put them on a site, the pictures they took would have this saying like, sorry can't use my picture. Or whatever, is there a way of doing that?

Never thought about that, AHAHAHAH! Thanks!! ?

Now about my poetry, what do I do for that? Or what should I do for that?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@pierskFeb 03.2004 — If you're going to be displaying the text on your site, then there's not much you can do. You could put some javascript in to disable right-clicking, but this could be got around by viewing the source via the menus at the top of the page. Also (as it has been suggested before) it is possible to disable javascript, so that would be useless.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@spufiFeb 03.2004 — If I want something on your site, then I can take it without even worrying about JavaScript because I could just do a screen print, or do File --> Save Page As... Honestly, if you have issues with people stealing something of yours, then don't put it on the net. End of story.

If you use pics, watermark them. If you use text, date when it was posted. Use a copyright on your site and then create a terms of agreement page telling people that if they wish to use something of yours, then they could do a number of things. One, they should contact you about it. Two, they should cite where they got the info and provide a link back to your site. If they don't do this, then they have broken the agreement and you have every right to go after them.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@pierskFeb 03.2004 — One thing you could do is backup your site and burn all the files onto CD. Then post the CD to yourself but don't open the package.

Then, if the time comes when you have to sort out copyright theft, you can take the CD as evidence, since the date that the postal service stamp on it is legally binding.

A friend of mine did that and he got a bit of money.

Please bear in mind that that was in the UK, so the laws might be different elsewhere.

@SweetDanger85authorFeb 03.2004 — ?

This kinda bites in a way. A lot of work, but if I really want to put this stuff on display, I should take consideration of all that work.

I just thought I'd ask because you guys might know a lot about html code, javascript codes, xhtml codes, and yata yata. But I can see why it wouldn't work. I mean there are so many other things people could do to get around it.

Only one thing, how would I go about doing a "terms of agreement?" I mean, how would I know someone agreed, and who didn't agree. Sorry, I'm a bit knew for html codes, javascripts, and yata yata.

I know basic Html and some javascript codes. Though, how would you go about doing the setup?

Hope to hear from you soon. THANKS!
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@pierskFeb 03.2004 — Terms of agreement: "By looking at this site, you agree not to use any of the contents without my prior consent"

or something along those lines. Please note that I am not a lawyer and therefore have no idea if the above is legally binding. I take no responsibility if its not.

@SweetDanger85authorFeb 03.2004 — ?

Thanks, it actually works for me.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@pierskFeb 03.2004 — I just wanted to put that so that no one could copy it an then say that I shouldn't have put it if it wasn't legal blah blah and then sue my arse.

Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@chris9902Feb 04.2004 — you can use flash and take the text highlight option off.

so people would have to re-write all your work. also if you had flash you can not right click on it so they would have to do a screen print or get a .swf decompiler

@rocky1Feb 05.2004 — In search of answers to blocking the right click and copy scenario ran across this topic elsewhere recently and thought you might find this info helpful ~

As far as java being the answer, you can find script to block the average at The JavaScript Source. Right next to that you can also find the script to crack the script that blocks entry and open the source code! Once the code is open you have access to the raw text, and access is gained to the file names for your graphics. The files aren't protected by the Java Script, outside of the page, and each may be individually opened in the browser, where you can copy them.

Java will keep the average individual from copying it, but there are those that know where to find the toys to open it, and how to use them if there's content they want.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@BinarytechFeb 05.2004 — I Agree. If it is incredibly important to 'protect' your content, then don't post in on your website. If you want to protect it from the average pc-savy person, you can use Flash, or even better yet, you can record your voice and use Flash to play it on your site. If you will do text, you can use Flash, but anyone can simply 'capture' what is seen on the screen. Anyhow, here is a good link to a Flash tutorial site:

@Dathor_VerloxFeb 05.2004 — Take my outlook on it, I have "obtained" a copy of Studio MX which is really useful and I advise anybody who wants a powerful set of web dev tools to buy.

My logic:

If I didn't get it for free, I wouldn't have paid so Macromedia are not losing anything.

Also I have told quite a few people about it and if anyone asks what my prefered web dev tool is I say Studio MX (then proceed to slag of frontpage which I hate with a vengance). This means that Macromedia are getting free advertising for their product (word of mouth). Thus they are actually more likely to gain money and profit from this.

@PeOfEoFeb 05.2004 — but the people you are "advertising" too are likely to just start up kazaa and download it themselfs. If you did in fact pirate software (not claiming that I never did, but I am not telling you what either am I?), do not tell people about it. It is just a good way to get in trouble. Macromedia does quite a bit of advertising, I do not think they need you to help them, and I do not think they have seen any revenue due to your "word of mouth" campaign.

I would actually suggest putting your actual site name in the <title> tag and placing what you have in the <title> tag somewhere on your page. If you want somebody to read it, they will more likely read it if it's on your page and not in your <title> tag.

Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@Blood_Sucker_Feb 06.2004 — Try using the "No Frames" script <no frames></no frames>

But only use this if your site isn't a free one, as using this in a free site will usually result in deletion of your site, as it can remove popups.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@SweetDanger85authorFeb 06.2004 — Ok, I was told in order to use my website url I have to use index word to save it under. Or it will not go under www.shortsweetdanger.com , it kept saying that it was under construction when things were on the page.

Now that I saved it under index in my file, it will go to url www.shortsweetdanger.com and show the stuff on my website.

So I had to save it under index, or it wouldn't go it. If I saved it as "home" in my file folder, I would have had to put www.shortsweetdanger.com/home and I didn't want it that way. You know what I mean?

So someone told me to save it as "index" in my file folder, and it ended up going to www.shortsweetdanger.com . It may sound confusing to you, but yeah. So now I wanted to change the index to something else, exciting. Like Welcome, or something.

Or maybe even doing it down in the part where it shows you the page is loading.... How would I go about doing that with HTML codes?

Sorry, I must be a pain in the ass. LOL
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@PeOfEoFeb 06.2004 — Index.html happens to be the default file on your server, or on your directory atleast. Hunt around in the control pannel (if there is one) for defalt files, and if you find it change it to home.html. If you cant do that, that means the default is index server wide and you are out of luck. Enter pages, and page loading pages are not good. Enter pages are not good for search engine ratings (doesnt see your content), and loading pages are going to fail to redirect a user or even work with a user that does not have java script (13% of the internet). So if you cant change the file my advice would be to make due with index.html

Inquiring minds want to know, and obviously you've not encountered the issue before or you wouldn't have all these questions. These are therefore logical questions or we wouldn't be taking the time to explain them either, so no, you're not a pain in the ass.

As for the file name versus title issue, the two are separate issues. Yes if you want the page to appear as your homepage and light up one's monitor, when they enter your Domain Name then it has to be saved as the "index.html" file, and that's what's going to show up in the Address Bar after your URL.

The page "Title" does not have to be "index" however, that may differ, and you may call the page what ever you like in the html tags.

In example the index page on my site is www.rtfi.us/index.htm, file there being "index.htm". However... the page title is <title>RTFI - Fishing & Fun - Rocky Thomas Fishing Industries - ND Fishing</title>. Cause and reason being, the the title is optimized for Search Engine find, and loaded very heavily with my keywords. This title shows, but not where you suggest you want it too.... it shows on Search Engine finds.

If you go to Google and do a search for any of the Keyword phrases within that title, you'll find that exact title, in the top 6 at Google. At worst case, #6 - "Fishing & Fun", competing against 3.76 million other finds on Google. So yes it does have a place in life, but not where you expect it.

The page title you suggest above is - 1.) too long, it needs to be shorter and more descriptive, your title should be limited to 12 words maximum, and 2.) it's not going to benefit you in search engine optimization, in any respect. Again, your title needs to be keyword heavy, but bear in mind this is what the engines are going to show when they find and list your site, so it should make a brief descriptive statement about your site.

If you want to post the message you suggest as a title on the site, I'd go find a java script, and run it bottom of the page in the status bar instead of in the title, see ~~>http://javascript.internet.com/scrolls/double-status-bar-message.html

The best way to do this (I do this with all of my code) is to print off all of the source, and maybe a screen shot. Take an envelope, and the hardcopies, to a notary public. Place the hardcopies in the envelope, the notary will seal and stamp it. This way, their is no disputing that the code/content is indeed yours. This is also known as the "Poor Man's Patent", lol.

Someone once stole some code for a Point of Sale application I was writing. Since I was writing v2.0, I had already notarised v1.0. I was able to prove that the code was mine b/c the seal on the envelope hadn't been broken, and the date notarised was well before he tried this.?

If there is code for this, it would have to be done client side. This would be useless b/c client side can be disabled.

which means you can just skip a step and not bother printing the screen. I mean half the time I keep java script turned off, so no right click scripts really do not affect me. I tend to enjoy not having java script on because it cuts down on crap like that, and scrolling ads on my screen that are not really popups so the fb blocker cant catch them.
