Link Exchange: Is This A Good Idea?

Link exchange sounds great! Why doesn’t everyone do it? Link exchange is often quick and easy to do, and offers the compelling possibility of increasing your own site’s traffic through advertising and search engine rankings.Whenever they put your link on their site, now you have to put theirs on yours. Wherever you plan to bury this link on your pages, you will still be offering traffic an easy way to leave your site. Leaving your site is exactly what you don’t want your visitors to do. Each link you provide to someone else’s site is actually helping them increase their own traffic and revenue — it doesn’t do a thing for your site when traffic leaves your own pages.

@daihuwsOct 25.2012 — I've never seriously considered taking part in link exchange programmes, for the following reasons:

* It's as old as the hills. I expect that all of the search engines are wise to it and have developed measures to detect it.

*
It looks weird, and wouldn't fit in seamlessly with the content of a website. I do link to things in cases where a user might want to do a bit of further reading elsewhere, or if there are other good reasons for doing so.

So I probably wouldn't do it anyway. The argument about you providing your visitors with an easy way of leaving your site is BS, though; it's not as if, if you don't have links on your site, that they have to stay on your site. For that, there's always the back button and the address bar...

@kasnakeNov 08.2012 — Two words: free advertising - The more traffic you can drive to your site, the better. It stands to reason that if you have a whole lot of links out there that point people to your site, you’ll reap rewards in the form of page hits. That’s the idea behind link trading, and the goal of engaging in such agreements.

@edword84Nov 09.2012 — According to my knowledge Link exachange is good when the page to which your linking has a high authority, trust, meaning it ranks high in search engines, which will add value to your site as well. But I think manually submission is better than link exchange.
