local storage of user generated data

I want the users of my website to choose between several images or colors to be used as their default background of my site. I want this choice to be stored and remembered so that the next time they come to visit my site, the background is the one they chose the last time. To do this I will be using local storage.

Local storage of simple variables I can do, but creating a script for storing user generated data is a bit difficult to handle. At least for me ?

So now I am looking for inspiration: does anyone know of any websites that actually have those choices today that I can look at and see if I can figure out how they´ve done things?

If so – I would be so grateful if anyone could point me in a good direction (I have been to w3schools and similar pages looking for inspiration).
