language has the widest appeal to prospective employers

Hi all,

I need some of your expert advice on server side languages.

I have been learning JavaScript for a few months now and I feel I need to learn a server side language to progress further.

My mainly JavaScript site is at: http://dominictheaker.t35.com

1) Is the level and complexity of code not enough to secure a junior programmer position?

2) My ultimate aim is to secure work as a web programmer, however I am not sure which language has the widest appeal to prospective employers.

3) Are there any diagrams that explain how all the server side languages fit together and what they are capable of doing?

4) Is there a site that explains the basic differences between the languages and how they differ?

5) From what I have read about server side languages it appears that PHP is a popular one and I get the impression that I should have focused my efforts into server side as apposed to client side JS.

6) What is the biggest market for prospective programmers? Is it in on line databases? What about interacting with say excel from the web?

7) If I wanted to produce a web based user input and display the results to the web in the form of a graph and then link this (via a login) to a specific person, then could I do this with PHP?

As fare as I am aware programming languages like PHP,ASP, Perl, VBscript etc. reside on the server and manage the data input, data calculation, data storage (via Dbase, text files, excel files etc) and output (to forms / graphs/ etc.).

My limited understanding of CGI is say a program written in perl can reside on the server and be called example.cgi. This perl program is placed in the CGI bin for use when called. Why do people rename perl extensions to “.CGI” when “.pl” would do? Does the same apply for the other server side languages?

8) Is the best place to start by installing some server software on my machine and playing with code examples or by trying to get these examples to work on the web?

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks,

Dom..
