Please advise why this sometimes prints “December 31, 1969” as the last modified date on my web pages? Do I need to use a Server Side language to get a more accurate Last modified date? Also is the lastModified() a function or method??
@gil_davisJan 28.2004 — #Not all servers support "lastModified". Some browsers see the null value and report the current date; others read the value as -1 and give you 1/1/1970 less one day (Dec 31, 1969).
It is properly "document.lastModified" without the parentheses. It is a PROPERTY of the DOCUMENT, not a function or a method.
@gil_davisJan 28.2004 — #the DOM or the actual web page?[/quote] The date is passed to the browser in the HTTP header information. It is accessible to client-side script through the Document Object Model (DOM). Is that what you mean?
On a well-behaved server (IMHO?), the date passed in the HTTP header should be the same date as the file created date that is displayed on a directory listing of the server.
