Help!?

I want to learn a few things but I am not sure where to start so maybe someone could help me get started ?

1.) I know I need to learn HTML and CSS but what about HTML 5, xml, xhtml, java script???

2.) And what is jquerry? :p

3.)For server side what do I need to know?

PHP OR PYTHON ?
ASP?
SQL?
JAVA?
?

  • 1. As you say, start with HTML4/CSS2.

  • 2. HTML5/CSS3 expand the functionality of HTML4/CSS2 but:

    _a) IE7 and IE8 are non-compliant, so need special consideration.

    _    b) Even compliant browsers do not use the same syntax. So HTML5/CSS3 is a mess of browser-specific variants.

    _c) HTML5/CSS3 WILL be the standard, but is not there yet, so whether it is a priority depends upon whether you want the goodies. If so, you will have to put up with the mess.

  • 3. Forget XHTML and XML they are obsolete.

  • 4. You need to learn Javascript AND PHP but which comes first is a moot point:

    _a) People who learn Javascript may use it to do things that PHP does better.

    _    b) But Javascript can do things that PHP cannot.

  • 5. My preference is to learn PHP, plus a smattering of Javascript for when you need it.

  • 6. Learn MySql when you have a good grounding in PHP.
