img swapping

On the website I’ve written, I am currently working on the thumbnails for the image gallery. What I’m trying to do is when someone clicks on one of the small colored squares that I’m using as “thumbnails” for each picture, I would like the square to turn white. And I want it to stay white until a different square is clicked on. This is to sort of keep the viewer’s place in where they are in browsing the pictures.

I’m not sure exactly how to go about doing this… any help would be very much appreciated. I know some Javascript, DHTML and basic image swapping, but I haven’t done a great deal with Javascript, so don’t assume that I know too much about it.

thanks!
