Legality of a site/bandwidth required

After a great deal of thought I’ve decided on a site I’d like to write.

After many rubbish meals/takeaway food in my area, I thought how about credit where credit is due….and criticism for where it isn’t!! The plan being that people in my home town, which ain’t that big, can submit reviews of food they’ve had in restaurants in the local area. My first question is, is it legal for me to accept and effectively publish criticism (I’m fairly certain they won’t object to praise!!) I’m aware that legal issues will depend on the country, so I live in the UK (Scotland). I’m hoping that people are allowed to criticise if they see fit….however, don’t want to see myself sued by an irate restaurant owner!!!

The site isn’t even started yet, but, in terms of bandwidth etc. can anyone tell me what sort of things I’m looking for in a host….this is something I’m really not sure of. The site is purely for fun and will be non-profit making – it’s just an idea at the moment, but I’d like to get a feel for what I’m looking for in terms of web hosting before I start to get it off the ground.

Any thoughts/ideas, as always will be most welcome!

@iniquity101Jan 23.2004 — I cant be certain, but i would imagine you can say whatever you like as long as it is 100% true.

As for webhosting it depends on what you need in the site. You will probably need server side language support, and to determine bandwith etc you need to estimate how many visitors you would get a month and how big your site is going to be.

Think newspapers - the 'readers columns' type thing.

For bandwidth it depends on your design.

One of my sites:

www.williamsons-oldham.co.uk

receives 800 hits/week, and uses 20MB bandwidth for that.

The whole site is under 2MB with more than 50 pages.

@ilbonparaurtiJan 24.2004 — When a user posts their review make sure you post a disclaimer there too, letting them know that THEY are responisble for what they say. Also make sure you record their IP address, so if worse comes to worse you can give the court the perp's IP address which can be used to trace back to the poster.

Also, make sure you have the ability to delete posts as needed. You may want to consider a user registration system that requires an email address and you may want to personally read every user's first post just in case.

Chances are you'll be fine but it's definately good to make sure your bases are covered.

I'll make a start on the 'bare bones' of the site and see what sort of size I'm potentially looking at. I can't really estimate how many visitors until such times as I get it up and running, which could take some time, in between, work/housework/husband and daughter, oh and 3 cats!
