Renaming a URL More Than Once

hello. i work for a company that sells roughly 4,000 medical, surgical, and dental products online. we recently revamped our site and now have the capability to rename our URLs to reflect our products. (URLs currently end with something like pdetails.aspx?subcatid=252&pid=17949.) the problem is that many of our products share the same generic names (for example, forceps).

each product has a unique product ID number and someone recently suggested that we temporarily use the product ID to create unique URLs that end with something like /forceps-555553 with the number referring to the product ID. the idea being that at least our URLs will show that we sell forceps.

as we are able to work on better specifying our product names, we would rename our URLs again to something with something like /surgical-forceps and /dental-forceps.

so my question is…. does renaming a URL more than once have any disadvantages when it comes to SEO? if so, what are they? would doing what we are considering doing have any benefit?

sorry for being long-winded, but i want to be as detailed as possible. thanks.

@dmaarc123Jun 04.2012 — Yes it is disadvantage, because if you done seo of any site you make a large number of backlinks for reach your site on the top of any search engine. After that if you change your URL so, all seo work is ended and spoiled. Because you submitted your old url and now using new one. For your new url, you have to do SEO again.

This thing happen with me when I done SEO of my project regarding EB-5 Visa|EB-5 Visa|Investor Visa and Real Estate Development|Real Estate Investor. Now I'm doing SEO again for this project.

There are few things which you have to take care of before doing this excercise:-

a) You can create multiple urls. The more urls you have such as

/forceps-555553

/forceps-555554

/forceps-555555

Higher your rankings will be on search engines.

CAUTION: You have to make sure that you do not create duplicate urls for the same product or same content. Search engines hate duplicate content and they will not appreciate website having multiple urls with keywords embedded but content duplicate.
