how to make connection between two colomn elements

hi some one please help me i want to create an e-book with left side tree type viewer for chapter selection.if i select one chapter in that tree i just want to see the chapter content in the right side html page.. i just done some small work on these thing i am able to create a tree type viewer when i select the chapter new html page is appearing..but i want to see tree viewer constant in the left side and contents in the right side.how to do this one..
