Website loading slow/with grey boxes

My website is loading very slow and with grey boxes/tables over it when loading. I’ve tried optimizing it both with my server and files. Maybe I’m missing something…I’m not a web designer, I’m a graphic designer so I built my site using fireworks and then importing to dreamweaver. I understand a little code though.
I thought maybe it was a cache issue, so I entered this code to my website at the end of the body coding: <div style=’clear:both’></div>
This may not be the solution because it didn’t do anything, or maybe I didn’t enter it in the right area in the code.

I’d appreciate any feedback, this is driving me mad…I’ve tried everything I know. I should also mention, it runs better in Firefox than in Safari or Google Chrome.

@rtretheweyFeb 13.2012 — The issue boils down to the fact that your main page consists entirely of a couple dozen images. None of them are very large, so they each download with reasonable speed, but for every one, the browser has to make another file request to your server. So if the server is a bit busier than usual or the user's network path gets a little congested, it can seem very slow to load.

If the tool you used to create the page allows you to create fewer image slices, that's the first step I'd suggest. But the best course is to redesign the page to be a combination of images and plain text. Not only will that make your site load much faster, it will mean the search engines will have a better understanding of what your site is all about. At present, the site is almost a blank slate to the search engines.

Web design is a learning process, so be patient with yourself as you learn more and more. I'm sure you'll do well. Good luck!
