Compatibility mode error in IE9

Hi everyone,

I’m trying a help a friend out with his kitchens website (I didn’t develop it) and I’ve just noticed that it doesn’t work at all in IE9 (other than show a couple of DIVs).

I’ve checked the CSS with the WC3 validator and fixed the one error it threw back.

Does anyone know why it’s not working in IE9, is it something to do with !DOCTYPE (something I know nothing about!)?

I don't get any left nav or text when I open it in IE9. How do I access the compatibility modes within IE?

It doesn't have a DOCTYPE, should it have one?

@aj_nscFeb 07.2012 — It does have a doctype - XHTML 1.0 transitional.

In IE9 access the compatibility modes by pushing F12 and then clicking the Browser Mode Menu.

Surprisingly, it even works in all browser modes in Quirks Mode - which is what it would be displayed with if it doesn't have a doctype, but that's besides the point.

@barbeluk1authorFeb 07.2012 — Thanks aj - I think I'll stop worrying about it as it must be something to do with my browser. According to my IE it doesn't display properly in any of the modes offered.
