Advice on transferring site

Hi,

I have asked a related question on this site a while ago.

Then I said that I have a newsletter that I want to send. People choose some options regarding the newsletter and I send them using a code made from scratch (I can’t use any newsletter programs because of the options people have to choose).
If I use the php mail function and a database with each person’s option sending these newsletters is easy.

My problem back then was that the emails would not reach yahoo emails, although people from here said it worked for them on their sites.

I talked to my webhosting company, and it gave me the following answer:

In regards to your yahoo mail, the issues that you have described pertain to yahoo mail services. You have to refer to Yahoo Mail and request them to whitelist the domain name.

I never knew there was something wrong with my domain. It is for a translations company why would yahoo blacklist it…anyway I wanted to buy a new domain anyway (for another site) and from another webhost and what do you know? I could send emails to yahoo from there.

The company that hosts my finished site, in 2010 was still using php4, maybe it still is…I forgot the name of the php file that told you these things.

On the other hand my site after five years still doesn’t have a page rank with google although it has good traffic (500 a day, in a small country, the site is in the native tongue of the country), it’s true my SEO skills are bad (so that might be the reason – and not that my site is sandboxed or something)

So I am puzzled. Should I transfer this site to also be hosted by the second company? Will it help or will I still not be able to send the emails from the site?

Like I said I sent the emails to yahoo email from the very new webspace I have bought. I even sent it saying in the header that it was from the other site. Should I send the newsletter like this, or is this a sure way to get blacklisted?
If not, is there any infaillible way of knowing whose fault it is that I can’t send emails from my current translations website? My site’s in particular or is it this current webhost’s fault?

How would you guys deal with this?

Thanks

Also if I transfer my site are there certain things I should keep in mind? Will I lose traffic?

php is server side I put this in GENERAL I didn’t realize here it was cliient side.

@BrianJamesJan 31.2012 — Hi! Can you make a list instead of the things that you wanted to happen?

Just to make your questions more organized.

@arrowthesparrowauthorJan 31.2012 — So, I mentioned 3 things:

  • 1. Site#1: a translation site that has been up and running for 5 years (webhost1)

  • 2. Site #2: not really a site yet just space on the web for a future site, on an entirely different subject (webhost2)

  • 3. My plan to transfer site #1 to webhost2 - if it proves to be a good idea.

  • Reason for transfer:

I want to send newsletters from site#1 using the php mail function and a database that has the readers options saved But I can't send emails to yahoo from site #1. I tried the same code from site #2 and it worked, so the coding is good.

The way I see it: Either there is something wrong with site#1 or there is something wrong with webhost#1.

I contacted the webhosting company and from their answer I understand they think my site#1 is at fault (that it is blacklisted). They say I should contact yahoo. But I am not so sure I am to blame.

Reasons why I think it might be the fault of webhost#1: They are very slow with upgrades. In 2010 they still were using php4, maybe they still are.

Reasons why I think it might be the fault of site#1: I still don't have a page rank with google (PR0 always was), although my traffic is not bad. On the other hand my SEO skills are not good, and it just might be that my inbound links (8) have no value.

    Question #1:

Can I send my newsletter from site #2 and not use any header information about where the emails are coming from? - or will that get me in trouble in the end, even if it would work?

    Question #2:

    How can I contact yahoo?

Question #3 - THE BIG QUESTION:

How can I tell if site #1 is to blame or if webhost#1 is to blame?

@criterion9Jan 31.2012 — There can be a whole bunch of reasons email domains may get blocked. Could be that an open proxy was discovered at some point at the IP connected to the domain. Perhaps the domain is hosted in a shared environment where the IP block has been identified as SPAMing. Could be that there are some missing details within the header in the email envelope. Could also be that Yahoo blocked a bunch of people and is only unblocking those who ask (same thing the local cable company does from time to time and figures people who are paying will complain and those who aren't won't want to get in trouble).

I would recommend you look into Yahoo's documentation and guidelines for email delivery. http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/smallbusiness/bizmail/spamguard/spamguard-21.html

It cannot be these two because like I said the email WAS sent from site#2.

If the sites are on different hosts the smtp server could be doing different things to the headers. Also Yahoo could be blocking by domain, IP, host, geolocation, or any other means of sorting mail traffic.
