Scripting symbols

I guess this is in the right place…….

New here, and wondering when I see some script, I sometimes see things like this <!—– or —->

Is that common to java script and what does it mean.

Also, if I get a script from someone on the net, and it has some of this code and some stuff about who created it or copyright stuff…..why when I remove it, it doesn’t work?

is an HTML comment. You will see it in a script so that the code will be hidden from old browsers and webbots.
