Overlaping on footer

Hi

I am creating a layout where the main content area overlaps over the footer. I can do that using this rule on the footer:
footer{
position: relative;
top: -20px;
}
My problem now is that at the bottom of the page theres a gap of 20px, is there a better way to achieve this.

I have a attached a screenshot

Thanks

Certainly You've done something wrong in CSS of elements over footer.

But It can be anything.

There was a issue with a floating elements. I finally go for the negative margin.

Thanks for your help.
