Expanding a websites scope overseas.

Some advice requested.

I have a website that is an industry specific business directory/community that is for the australian region. One of the features is that it searches and lists businesses via australian states.

I am contemplating opening the website up for America, Canada, UK, Europe and so on and I was wondering the best way to approach this for the sake of ease of use and search engine optimisation.

Do I create a separate clone of the website for each region. eg. [url]www.mywebsite.com.au[/url], [url]www.mywebsite.uk[/url], [url]www.mywebsite.ca[/url]

DO I have it on one domain with clones of the website in different subdomains eg. au.mywebsite.com, uk.mywebsite.com, ca.mywebsite.com

or do I have it as one large website with different features, and search results displayied for different users from different regions based on their ip address.

@JoshMilesNov 16.2011 — See it depends upon your preferences. If you want to caters region specific services then it would be appropriated to get different website. It help you;

1. Focus SEO strategies for different countries.

2. You will have separate performance from different region

3. You can cover greater region for that country

But if your budget is tight then you can consider subdomains. But personally i feel a big website would be difficult to organize and maintain. Also if you want to SEO that big a website, it will be difficult too.

@regansNov 18.2011 — Maybe folders can be the best solution. That's because multiple domains tend to have duplicate content, which degrades the general site in SEO rankings. Also, you will have to brand each of the domains, concerning about each of the audiences.

@turkeypropertyDec 05.2011 — I would suggest subdomains. You can still set each one to be region specific through Google Webmaster Tools and get individual backlinks for them, and be able to manage them all from one place.
