Question For Coding a Web Site Layout

Greetings Everyone,

I am creating a web site and I want the layout to be the “look/feel of a notebook or binder”. What mark up language or programing languages should I use? I heard that I might need to use Flex-Flash which I never used before.

This is the link to what I am describing.

Any help will be appreciated!

@touch_the_sky1Nov 01.2011 — You should always be using html markup and CSS. If you need to, progressively enhance your site with js.

It's Nov 2011, therefore html5 (+microdata) + CSS3 would be your choice. That's all you need to achieve what you want.

About the site you posted: You may like what your eyes see, but from technical point of view, it's not a superb example. Especially, flash-made navigation is a sign of some incompetence (this is bad practice for a number of reasons). The fact that it doesn't even have any visuals which would be some sort of excuse in the pre-html5 times makes it double-bad.

You can achieve this look and MUCH, much more than that by following standards. (It can be ok to have Flash on your site, just NO flash navigation, NO all-flash websites, etc.)

@VillainauthorNov 02.2011 — I already started using HTML, I need to work on my CSS and JS skills. I have thought about using HTML5 and CSS3 however; I am worried if someone views my web site that does not have their browser up-to-date capable of seeing HTML 5 and CSS3 code.

thanks for the input about the Flash stuff, I didn't know about the web site being too flashy isn't a good idea.

@Major_PayneNov 02.2011 — Doesn't matter if browsers are up to date as HTML 5 hasn't been released yet and few browsers fully/partially support HTML 5. Only a few browsers fully support CSS 3 which also hasn't been released, but is more popular.

The link you gave is to a site that is done in flash. If you know how to code in ActionScript 3 then you can set the site up just like that site.

Are you deliberately trying to teach Villain some bad practice? What if it's not a 'one-off' and he's serious about webdev, potentially looking to land some job someday in the future?

This:
You may like what your eyes see, but from technical point of view, it's not a superb example. Especially, flash-made navigation is a sign of some incompetence (this is bad practice for a number of reasons).[/quote]
Few reasons:

1) NO Seo (people may like to look at your Flash site, but how are they gonna find it in the first place - crawlers don't have eyes, they parse mark up so make sure it's as good as possible?)

2) NO accessibility

3) Usability issues - no right-click for example

Especially, that as I already said this particular site would be so extremely easy to do without Flash it's pointless anyway. And again, as I already said - it can be ok to have Flash on your site - just not for navigation elements (or even worse - an all-Flash site)

Now, Html5 + CSS3. While building your site, you may look into applying the graceful degradation / progressive enhancement rules. Basically, have your site looking / functioning good in the worst browsers you consider, than improve the experience for those who have new ones. Do a bit of research on what might be problematic and you'll sure come up with some standards compliant solution.

EDIT: If you want to commit to webdev (you'll need more than 2 seconds of time though?, you may find those somewhat useful:

Alistapart

Html5 boilerplate

Teach?????? I answered the question exactly as OP wanted. The site link he gave is a flash site. If he wants to make one using flash, it is his choice...NOT mine. I know all about the SEO problems with flash, but it is not my place to bring them up at this time.

I am not here to point out the problems with flash unless the question is asked. It wasn't. Please try to stick to the point. If you wish to add additional information, please refrain from quoting posters incorrectly.

@touch_the_sky1Nov 02.2011 — I always stick to the point. Unlike you, I provided OP with some valid information. If someone asks about doing something certain way, and you know it's possible but wrong - you must be rather mean not to tell?

You posted the information you wanted. I'm against quoting and blaming someone else who posted. Done with this.

@touch_the_sky1Nov 03.2011 — I provided OP with valid, comprehensive information. You jumped in to the thread, not adding much really, just a bit of confusion (spam much?). The site link OP gave is not a Flash site anyway, it's a site which contains Flash navigation though.

I think everyone can see how much of a skilled webdev you are by following the link in your signature (please note the sarcasm). Before I went there I treated you as a partner for a webdev related discussion - I was wrong. Therefore I take back my @Major_Payne question and wish you best of luck ?
