@NogDogOct 15.2011 — phpMyAdmin is written in PHP and is run as a web app. MySQL Workbench is a stand-alone app, I believe written in C++. I've only played around with Workbench a bit, so don't know a whole lot about it, but it provides more of a graphical interface that phpMyAdmin does. Easiest thing to do, though, is download both and see which you like better (or likely end up using both ? ).

@eval_BadCode_Oct 16.2011 — Try them both and see. Kind of an old argument which one is better. I like MySQL Workbench more, just because I do. It's all preference.

I find it handles binary data better, is helpful for making clear backups, hotcopies, ERDs, and keeping itself in-line. The only downside is it crashes every now and then for no reason. But to be fair, PMA times out during large requests. They basically offer the same features in different ways (minus the ERD/EER creation in MW?. There's also some python scripting you can do in MWB which is very helpful if you know python.

@touch_the_sky1Oct 16.2011 — Also, have a look at SQL Yog and Navicat. Both of them are awesome.

The difference between phpMyAdmin and one of the 2 above is like comparing a brand new Rolls Royce Phantom to some barely-operational, derelict, rusty old banger - just unfair (phpMyAdmin being the crappy car in this example). I'm talking features, comfort, productivity.
