Problem Google indexing pages while still being built

My client is very upset with me now that Google has started indexing the site even before when are done building it. Pages have been indexed that contain non-sensical content. Should I use, temporarily these meta tags?

<META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW”>

think i read once they can cause more harm than good. again, how do I stop only temporarily, Google from indexing pages that aren’t finished??

Would appreciate any help, thank you!

@developerguruOct 10.2011 — See you can use two methods for your site to prevent it from indexing by google.

First put your site behind .htaccess

If you do this you can not view the site without username and password and the same thing applies for google.

Second thing you can use robot txt and set it to no-index.

Choose the the way that is best suited for you.

@Christophe27Oct 10.2011 — In my experience webpages sometimes does get indexed by using the meta-robots tags (noindex) and robots.txt (disallow /)

On developing I always put websites behind a password. This is the only secure way to prevent webpages being indexed by Google. ?

To quickly remove the webpage from the Google index, check out this page: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=164734
