Detect request coming from a smart phone or tablet

Hi

My website is based on Java servlet based MVC architecture. Now we are designing different layouts of web page for Tablet and for smart phone. What is the best way I can detect that the request is coming from phone or a Tablet.

I'm not very knowledgable on the subject, but i found this link talking about USER AGENT, i hope it helps some..
