I get as much from w3schools.com as I got from this book which is to say I wouldn't have spent money on a book for beginner html if it wasn't required for school.
w3school apparently isn't thought of well by some people but for getting down the basics of html, xhtml, css, doctype declarations, etc. I think it's great.
I learn better from video tutorials and I really like the beginner tutorials which are free from net.tutsplus.com . Look for "web development from scratch" series.

I agree with Frank62 and iansane6 on w3schools.com is the best way to learn HTML. I have seen professors at my college recommend this website to students to learn HTML or any other coding languages. I have used w3schools.com to help me build my first website which I found very helpful. I am using this website currently to learn different markup languages as well.

A very unfair critique, that on w3fools. If you have a site that is as immense as W3Schools, you're bound to find a number of errors and omissions. That's easy, with thousands of reviewers scrutinizing the site every day. What is seemingly not so easy is to send in the found errors to the makers of W3Schools.
And what is seemingly even less easy is to create a site like W3Schools. I mean, just look at the alternatives offered by the nerds of w3fools. They don't even come close to W3Schools, in terms of coverage and didactic qualities.
