Confused in creating email client in php

First of all thanks guys. Because of you now i have reached the stage at which i am able to make any website or application in php at a pro level.

But i am ?confused? now for starting to make a web email client in php.

Please help and suggest me where to start from for making a fully working email website with custom made email client.

Is it necessary for me to learn the SHELL scripting of LINUX in order to set up a email server or should i set it up by reading server setting manual using various packages.

I just want to make a small web site for email like yahoo mail or gmail. But i dont know how to extract emails from the server and display in the website or how to send the email from the website through my server to other servers.

And also is it necessary to buy a server to run a email website???

Please help….
