After HTML and CSS…where to next??

I have just finished a great book on learning HTML and CSS, but has left me with a lot of questions.

The main one being, logically where to go next? I’m trying to start a web development project (I have another person to take care of design) but can’t get a good answer on what I will actually need to know!

If I go through a web hosting company to host my site does that take care of the whole server-side of things? Should I learn PHP, MySQL, anything else?? I’m just a complete rookie and need some guidance here.

Thanks for any help people x

@maneetpuriAug 22.2011 — Hi,

The next towards development would be to learn a programming language and start making dynamic websites. You have PHP, .NET, CGI Perl and many more options to choose from, first two being the most popular ones.

Happy Development!

Cheers,

@ajmcloughlinauthorAug 22.2011 — Thanks for your help.

I was considering going into java php and mysql next, try and get that under my belt!

What is the deal with server-side/client side then? If your using a web hosting company surely all you have to worry about is coding the webpages?

Cheers

@NoasITAug 22.2011 — PHP and MySQL are processed server side to output stuff to the user.

HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are client side, they are processed by the browser to create pretty pages (or un-pretty if poorly made!)

@eval_BadCode_Aug 23.2011 — You can assemble code by hand if you want. It's not technically a programming language, but it's by far the most intense. Then I guess you can make an assembler, then a compiler, then a compiler for your compiler.

Or just skip ahead to PHP

@JimmyBanksAug 23.2011 — probably PHP or .NET

@amsoft2001Aug 23.2011 — I would suggest you to to first get you css and html perfect with developing any static site. CSS seems to be very small but actually it a very huge platform. Then surely you can move ahead with php, java, .net and any other language but first make your css and html pefect..:-)
