Performance question

Hello all,

I have a question regarding page performance, as I continue working as a developer the size of my projects increase to bigger and more complex tasks (which I like).

My question is, is it possible that I could be doing something wrong in my php code that affects the performance of my sites? For example, I have simple html pages and I have no problem getting them to load, but some of my pages that contain php and connections to databases, when I’m working on them, I constantly have to refresh them to see if a change worked fine or not, and sometimes they take a while to load, sometimes they load just fine, its like the problem happens 40% of the time, and when they do take a while I mean a minute or so, is up to that point that I get tired and hit refresh again and it loads.

I know I should probably be working locally when testing but I don’t like it.

Does anybody know of any tools that could probably help me nail this problem or does anybody have any suggestions that could help me get over this problem.

Thanks for any help provided ?

Both hardware and software.

It would also be grateful for comments on the tasks performed by scripts that access the database.
