Keeping domain name but setting up new site with different provider

Hi there,

A client has commisioned me to redo his old site but I need to know the steps to take to move from one service provider to another while keeping his domain name. I envisage having trouble setting up a new site while the old one is still in existence. I presume that I will have to contact his current provider to finish the old site after the new one is up and running or else there will be conflict between the old and new site. Also will Goolge pick up on the new site and rank it accordingly as currently his site is number one in there ranking. Sorry if this seems like a stupid question but I have never done this before and could do with some pointers.

Thanks in advance?

@itrcJul 15.2011 — hi if you are thinking of Google ranking then there is no way you will get the same ranking at the same time , but what you can do is you can redirect the site to new site and then you need to do the seo work once again .

@webexpert00Jul 29.2011 — hi, you are right that you have to contact the old service provider to transfer all the details to you and then you can upload them on the new one. once you are done with this, you can redesign your site and can upload newly designed pages on the server. It will not effect its ranking too, as ranking depend on domain not on website design.

@pingpipeAug 11.2011 — A site/domain migration can seem tricky if you've never done it before, there's no stupid questions. Here are the steps to take.

1) Upload your content to the new provider.

2) Administer the domain name at your client's registrar, delete current nameservers and enter NS1 and NS2 info for new hosting provider.

3) Allow 3 days for the nameserver change to propagate throughout the internet, then you can contact the "old" provider and cancel the "old" account.

You can do a whois check to confirm that the nameservers are updating throught the internet, if you want.
