Is there a way to share a remote dev environment?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

But I was wondering…
Say that I want to develop something together with a few other people. Is there a way for us to all connect to the same remote server through some development program.
So that we all share the same files and we don’t risk overwriting each others files when uploading new ones, etc.
Sort of like web development in the cloud I guess…

I hope you understand what I mean..
