$_FILES with Ajax

This problem may not end up including Ajax at all, but it’s usually my go to when I get into trouble.

Step 2 to my user signup is to choose a profile picture. After browsing to choose a picture from there computer, I want their picture to show up so they can see a preview of what they’ve chosen. Just imagine using facebook or myspace here.

I was thinking of uploading the file right on the change. But I don’t want the user to have to click Submit. But if I’m gonna use Ajax to do that, I don’t know how to send files as opposed to just regular <input>.

Any suggestions on how to approach this problem would be very much appreciated.
