What language would be best and how to get started?

Hello! I am wanting to make a blog type website with the ability to expand in the future. Adding things such as a forum, store, and other features. What would be the best starting point for me? I have some web developing experience, but it is sparse. I suppose html5 would be the best bet.

@MrSnowDropApr 19.2011 — The question has not much sense for me... at the matter of fact there isn't a language better than another; each language has its own specific role depending by personal needs, and many languages will give better performances in synergy...

If you only have to build a blog, Wordpress could be an appropriate solution.

And anyway, the starting point is here:

@custom-foldersApr 25.2011 — HTML5 and XHTML would be best as starting point. You can use any of server side language to extend the application. I would suggest PHP as server side language.

I agree with MrSnowDrop wordpress would be appropriate option for blog, however there are a number of other blogs available.

Majority of third party applications like CMS, blogs, forums use PHP+MySQL, so your familiarity to this language will help you in future.

HTML is a base of web development. You must need to learn it before you can proceed towards web development languages. After that you may learn PHP as it is best for e-commerce websites. You may develop a website on a CMS too and customize it according to your needs, if you feel you would not be able to spend much time on learning programming languages.
