css sprite question

I’m pretty sure this is not possible, but I thought I would take a shot anyway.

Is it possible to designate a portion of a CSS sprite to repeat? In other words, can i create a sprite that has 2 different repeating images? I know this is possible on either the X, or Y, but both?
