php session question

[FONT=&quot]Is there a concept of a PHP session separate from the Apache (or IIS) session? I’ve been told that a ‘PHP’ session is stored separately and can outlive the web containers session, but I’ve never heard of it before.

Thanks

@NogDogMar 08.2011 — Not sure I understand the question, but PHP sessions are not "Apache sessions" or "IIS sessions", other than they normally exchange a session ID cookie with the client, so the web server is involved in the HTTP requests that send/receive that cookie, but that is the web server's only involvement in the process.
