javascript search database?

Hi, basically I want to know if I can create some code that when the users enters a word, that word will come back with a description from a database using javascript. I can do this in php however I want to know how to do it in javascript. I have tried searching google and cannot find a tutorial.

any help would be appreciated,

@tirnaFeb 27.2011 — If you want to use javascript without page refreshes then you will have to make friends with AJAX

@cbVisionFeb 28.2011 — I believe you have to use a server language to actually make calls to the database though. The AJAX talks to a PHP script which connects to the database.

I don't *think* AJAX can talk directly to a database; though it's new stuff to me, so I'm curious if there are other options!
