Browser goes back when user try to backspace in readonly box

I have a lot of forms and input boxes. Some of them are readonly and it’s not that visible and when some users try to erase what’s in them with the backspace button the browser goes back to the previous page. And in the process everything they’ve written in the input boxes is lost. It seems this problem only exists in IE.

Any ideas how I can prevent this problem?

@cluefulFeb 12.2011 — A scripted solution would be onfocus="this.blur();", but that's no use if script isn't enabled.

If the data is readonly, you could store it in a hidden input and replicate its content in an element styled to look like a text input.
