novice needs help

background loading issues…
I’m not advertising anything…

I’ve painstakingly created a website named http://www.sportoyswarehouse.com and the background loads slower than most other sites that I’ve seen like mine (http://www.stevesatv.com/). I’ve tried CSS and it still loads approximately the same speed. Is there a basic way I can achieve faster loading time with a full image based background? Is it my hosting provider? Please help and if it is not to much to ask, please be specific.

I’m most familiar with html code and slowly getting better with css. Java, xml and all those others is still a unfamiliar language to me.

ANY help is appreciated thank you for your time.

@TazDevilLooneyFeb 12.2011 — I clocked it at 2.88 seconds which is pritty fast.

You could enable compression for these files and save 29.7KiB (70% reduction).
Compressing http://www.sportoyswarehouse.com/ could save 8.9KiB (66% reduction).
Compressing http://www.sportoyswarehouse.com/SpryAssets/SpryMenuBar.js could save 6.3KiB (66% reduction).
Compressing http://www.sportoyswarehouse.com/Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js could save 5.5KiB (69% reduction).
Compressing http://www.sportoyswarehouse.com/styles.css could save 4.8KiB (85% reduction).
Compressing http://www.sportoyswarehouse.com/SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css could save 4.1KiB (72% reduction).
Might get 0.25 sec quicker.

@YelgnidrocFeb 12.2011 — 1 - Use data compression on jpg's

2 - Use Firefox and YSlow add on

All depends on the speed of your internet connection

@webseaauthorFeb 12.2011 — Thanks I'll try it out, but can you tell me what I can do to make it load just as fast (or faster) than stevesatv.com? What is the key to the code that will make my site load quick? If all it will take is compressing my jpegs then I'll try that, but I have a feeling there's more to it.

And by these questions I mean outside the language of html if it HAS to be that way.

@YelgnidrocFeb 12.2011 — The download speed depends on a lot of things; I've often found excessivle large uncompressed images to be one of the main causes.

But, that's not everything. If you 've got lots of css, html, javascript than can add to the time - try stripping out css and javascript and see what results timewise, obviously display and functionality will be different.

Then... Are any scripts running on the server or local computer that could slow the download time?

@TazDevilLooneyFeb 12.2011 — Hi websea,

You can use Parallelize downloads across hostnames. This would involve singing up for another web address and placing your pictures on the server. This would also save on cookies. But you be paying for 2 website addresses.

Success!
